Osseo teen lands after-school job with real impact

There aren't too many teenagers who can say their after-school job has real world impact, but 17-year-old Allison Vang can say just that.   The Osseo High School senior has parlayed an internship she did last summer with Medtronic into a paid, part-time job with the Fortune 500 company.   "I've been coming in and assisting the scientists or the researchers with their experiments here in the lab or [doing] a lot with organizing data," said Vang. ... After working full-time through the summer months, Allison's mentor and senior principal scientist, Cathy Condie, asked her to stay on during the school year.  ... "Just the presence of a high school student is fun, they bring a different energy to the group, a different perspective, the questions she asks are very insightful and also kind of get us to think differently." ... She hopes to attend the University of Minnesota Twin Cities next fall, and she would like to pursue a career in nursing, though she would like to continue doing research as well.

OEC is a high school program that teaches junior and senior high school students emergency medical skills. The year-long series of classes cover First Aid, CPR, Responding to Emergencies, First Responder, CPR instructor, and EMT certifications. ... These classes will challenge students, giving them much needed experience if they are headed into the medical world. It is also a great way to test and see if you are interested in the medical field.

OEC is part of Osseo's Health Science Magnet Program. As part of this program, Osseo also offers Human Med science classes, Bioethics, Human Med Health, Certified Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide, and Pharmacy Technician (online).
