Emergency Department Clinicals
Mar 13, 2008

Starting March 28th, your son or daughter will be attending a clinical observation at a hospital emergency department (minimum of 1 at Mercy and Unity). This is an important and exciting time for the students. Without this clinical experience the students will not be allowed to take the National Registry of EMT exam in June. This opportunity is afforded to every student who is passing the course with a C (75%) or greater. Students will need to pass a quiz (80% minimum) based on the information in their clinical packets. Poor behavior in class or at other OEC events will eliminate students from clinicals also. The students have worked hard for this opportunity and part of their success is due to your support and commitment.
In order to make this the best possible experience for the students and the clinical sites we must inform you about some of the policies in place. Students will observe for a minimum of one 5 hour shift, shadowing an emergency department technician or registered nurse. Available shifts will be on Tuesdays through Sundays. The shifts are: Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday 1600-2100, Fridays 1800-2300, Saturdays 1200-1700, 1800-2300, Sundays 1200-1700, 1700-2200. If space allows, students are allowed to do extra clinicals and will receive extra credit.
Students represent OEC and our school when they are in the department. Professional dress and behavior are demanded. Students are expected to purchase and wear green scrubs. Comfortable rubber soled shoes are also expected. They are to wear their OEC name tag. Students who do not follow these guidelines are to be sent home and will be scratched from future clinicals.
The National Registry of EMT’s requires five patient contacts and must be signed by a nurse before they leave. This form is necessary to take the EMT written examination.
Students must be signed up for their clinical shift by March 25th. On that date, we have been asked to finalize our shifts so any free shifts can be given to other schools. Students must be signed up for one shift at each hospital.
Please discuss possible dates with your child. Switches will not be allowed after April 1. If you must cancel due to illness, students are required to contact the charge nurse at the facility and Gary Leafblad @ 612-790-1535 or David Casella @ 612-790-1534.
Lab hours must be reasonably up to date. We only send the best. Each clinical shift is worth 100 points after the homework assignment is turned in as well as the clinical form. If you have any questions, feel free to call or e-mail us.
