Both OEC programs feel that the value of their programs would work well for homeschool students just as it does for medically minded public and private school students.  If students think they may want to go into a medical or emergency career, OEC will give you the background and allow you to test that interest while still a high school student. The seat belt challenge is a campaign to educate and encourage the school body to wear their seatbelts.<br /><br /><strong>Seatbelt Check - March 30 & May 2<br /></strong>We conduct a survey of drivers and passengers entering the school parking lot at the beginning and at the end of the challenge.<br /><br />Our first count was on March 30.  We counted 301 cars.  Of those cars, 142 drivers were wearing their seatbelts (47%).  87 of 134 passengers wore theirs (65%).  Overall, 239 of 435 students were wearing their seatbelts (54.9%).<br /><br />Our second count was on May 2.  We counted 215 cars.  Of those cars, 304 drivers were wearing their seatbelts (89.15%).  117 of 166 passengers wore theirs (70%).  Overall, 421 of 507 students were wearing their seatbelts (83%).<br /><br />We were pleased with our apparent success. Students come into class wearing a "grim reaper" outfit and identify a student to "kill".  The student then reads a story of how they died. The course was set up with dead ends and interconnected roads. Students met with legislators while students demonstrated skills. Correll Foundation is currently accepting applications for their annual scholarship.<br /><br />This is the TLCF's fifth year giving out this award, which began in memory of Timothy Correll, a volunteer firefighter and EMT who died in a car accident in December of 2002.<br /><br />"This is for kids who have a heart for helping people the same way Tim did," Karen Correll, foundation director, said.<br /><br />Only Minnesota high school students who want to pursue an education in a state-accredited nursing, fire science, paramedic or emergency medical programs are eligible for the $100-$500 scholarship.&nbsp;<br /><br />Award decisions are made by the TLCF Board of Directors. Applicants will be chosen based on their demonstrated commitment to service, desire to complete their education, eagerness to make a positive impact on community and financial need.<br /><br />To apply, students need to include a letter of recommendation from a teacher and from a member of the community, as well as a student application and a copy of acceptance into their college or program.<br /><br />"We want to help students who want to train to help their communities," Correll said.<br /><br />&nbsp;Applications and recommendation forms are available through the TLCF website: <span style="color:#0000ff;"><a href="http://www.tlcf-inc.org" rel="self">www.tlcf-inc.org</a></span>. This is a competition where teams of 4 high school students are tested on their knowledge as well as their hands-on skills.  The teams are put into 3 different multi-victim scenarios where they have to demostrate the treatment of wounds as well as deal with changing situations.  Teams are also given a written test that are taken individually but are scored as a group. <br /><br />State competition is exciting and inspiring to watch.
