OEC provided EMTs and First Aid workers to cover the medical needs of the OMGBA Boys and Girls Tournaments in and around Osseo and Maple Grove. The tournaments were over the weekends of Nov 9-11 and Nov 16-18.

OEC offers Child and Infant CPR Class

OEC offer a week of Free Adult CPR classes

Free CPR week will be November 12-16 at Osseo Senior High School.

Eight second-year OEC students (called interns) will teach the classes. Their hope is to train 100 people in our community in CPR and the use of AEDs (automatic external defibrillators). The classes run from 6-10pm. Pick what day you would like to be trained and contact the OEC office to sign up. Call 763-391-8519 or email.

Osseo OEC students volunteered at the 2007 Twin Cities Marathon. Twenty-four students staffed 5 stations along the route of the race providing first aid to participants and attendees.

OEC puts on Moulage at Afton Alps

Osseo OEC students assisted Afton Alps medical put on a moulage to help train their ski patrol personnel. Twenty-four students served as victims. Two interns performed the moulaging (putting on the bloody makeup). 34 ski patrol members were trained in the event.

Osseo and SLP OEC programs exhibit at the Minnesota Homeschoolers Alliance annual conference. Both OEC programs feel that the value of their programs would work well for homeschool students just as it does for medically minded public and private school students. If students think they may want to go into a medical or emergency career, OEC will give you the background and allow you to test that interest while still a high school student. Being a program that brings in students from surrounding schools, homeschoolers would not stand out for being in the building for just the one class.

2007 Seat Belt Challenge 2007 Seatbelt Challenge

Osseo High School is again participating in the seat belt challenge. The seat belt challenge is a campaign to educate and encourage the school body to wear their seatbelts.

Seatbelt Check - March 30 & May 2
We conduct a survey of drivers and passengers entering the school parking lot at the beginning and at the end of the challenge.

Our first count was on March 30. We counted 301 cars. Of those cars, 142 drivers were wearing their seatbelts (47%). 87 of 134 passengers wore theirs (65%). Overall, 239 of 435 students were wearing their seatbelts (54.9%).

Our second count was on May 2. We counted 215 cars. Of those cars, 304 drivers were wearing their seatbelts (89.15%). 117 of 166 passengers wore theirs (70%). Overall, 421 of 507 students were wearing their seatbelts (83%).

We were pleased with our apparent success. We increased our students' safety 28% overall.

Posters - April 9
We made and posted 10 posters that encouraged students to use their seatbelts.

How many ways can you say "Buckle Up"? - April 11
We also made and posted 10 posters with the phase "Wear your seatbelt" written in different languages.

Green Ribbons - April 10
We tied green ribbons to student and teacher's cars. Attached to each ribbon was a friendly reminder to wear their seatbelt.˙

Speaker - April 17
A speaker from Mothers Against Drunk Driving came and spoke to students about loosing her son and the importance of sober driving.

Lunch Room Pledges - April 17, 19, 20
We encouraged students to sign a pledge that stated they would wear their seatbelts. We handed out candy, stickers, and other information.

MADD car - April 19
Mothers Against Drunk Driving is providing a crashed car to serve as a visual demonstration of the damage that can happen if you are not safe.

Student Survey - April 19
We survey the student body to see if they wear their seatbelt, if they require passengers to wear seatbelts, and if they require their parents to wear seatbelts. Students who fill out their survey and fill in their name will be entered in a raffle. Dunn Bros coffee and a tanning spa gave us free certificates to raffle to students.

Chalk Outlines - April 23
We draw body outlines on the sidewalk in front of the school to remind students of the consequences of not being safe.

Ghost Out - April 30
We are "killing" students in classes throughout the day to illustrate the effect of loosing classmates to car crashes. Students come into class wearing a "grim reaper" outfit and identify a student to "kill". The student then reads a story of how they died. They put on a shirt and cannot talk for the rest of the day.

Fatal Vision - April 26
We set up a course for studnets to follow but they were to where goggles that are designed to simulate the disoriantation of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The course was set up with dead ends and interconnected roads. Students were tasked to get from one corner to the other while "driving" their car (card-board box).

Richfield Mock Crash - April 27 and Elk River Mock Crash - May 3
We assisted in two mock crashes at area schools. We did the make up (moulaging) for the crash victims.

Commercial
Our commercial is a techno-dance/action/mime/drama/comedy/horror/tear-jerker. Choreographed by Karyn. Music by Eric. Also starring Anna. It is a 30 second commercial and will be submitted in a contest. It is online here!

OEC to the State Capitol

The Minnesota Association of Career Technical Administrators (MACTA) held a rally at the Minnesota Capitol Rotunda from 12:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. on February 13th, 2007 to recognize and celebrate the month of February as Career and Technical Education Month.

We were pleased to have Osseo Senior High School Health Care students participate in this event. Students met with legislators while students demonstrated skills. Legislators spoke in support of proposed funding initiatives for Career and Technical Education brought forth this legislative session.

Scholarships available for fire science, paramedic students, nursing students

JORDAN — The Timothy L. Correll Foundation is currently accepting applications for their annual scholarship.

This is the TLCF's fifth year giving out this award, which began in memory of Timothy Correll, a volunteer firefighter and EMT who died in a car accident in December of 2002.

"This is for kids who have a heart for helping people the same way Tim did," Karen Correll, foundation director, said.

Only Minnesota high school students who want to pursue an education in a state-accredited nursing, fire science, paramedic or emergency medical programs are eligible for the $100-$500 scholarship.

Award decisions are made by the TLCF Board of Directors. Applicants will be chosen based on their demonstrated commitment to service, desire to complete their education, eagerness to make a positive impact on community and financial need.

To apply, students need to include a letter of recommendation from a teacher and from a member of the community, as well as a student application and a copy of acceptance into their college or program.

"We want to help students who want to train to help their communities," Correll said.

Applications and recommendation forms are available through the TLCF website: www.tlcf-inc.org. Applications are due March 10 and can be sent to TLC Foundation 2007 Memorial Scholarship, 209 West First St., Jordan, MN 55352.

State Competition is around the Corner

State Emergency Care Competition will be held at Osseo High School, February 24. This is a competition where teams of 4 high school students are tested on their knowledge as well as their hands-on skills. The teams are put into 3 different multi-victim scenarios where they have to demostrate the treatment of wounds as well as deal with changing situations. Teams are also given a written test that are taken individually but are scored as a group.

State competition is exciting and inspiring to watch. For more information please check out this informational brochure.

CTA Month

OEC Raises $682 for Adopt-A-Family

OEC students raised $682 for Adopt-A-Family at the beginning of December. This was enough to provide presents for 13 individuals for the holiday season. This surpassed the initial class goal of $500. After collecting money for a week, students went shopping for items families had requested through a local charity. Students then wrapped the gifts and gave them to the charity to distribute to the specific families.

OEC puts on free CPR classes for a Week

November 13-17, OEC Interns (second year students) put on a week of free CPR classes. The ten interns were able to train 59 people, both OSH students and community members, in Adult CPR, Adult Choking, and AED.

OEC Fall Camp

At the end of October, 60 students spent five days at a camp for intesive hands-on training. Together with the Spring Lake Park OEC studnets, they participated in simulated emergencies and classes ranging from self defense to firefighting. By the end of the week at camp, students returned home with skills and knowledge as well as bolstered self-confidence and understanding.

Adopt-a-Highway

This September OEC staff and students went out to our stretch of Jefferson Hwy. in Osseo to pick up some trash. OEC has adopted this part of Osseo roadway and takes care of it three times a year.
