Opportunities in Emergency Health Care (OEC) are High School programs in Osseo and Spring Lake Park. The two programs work together on several events, primarily Fall and Spring Camps. We offer a selection of courses that as a whole are called OEC.
OEC main classes
While OEC contains many different classes, the main series of classes are a 2-hour, year-long classes that cover 1st Aid, CPR, First Responder, CPR instructor, and EMT certifications. In one year Juniors and Seniors can learn all these certifications and more.
They are a sequence that are listed as separate classes on the schedule but are in essence a single year-long course. We may loose students each semester (due to interest or schedule conflicts) but it is rare that we add any since each class builds on itself through the year. For this reason, students that come from districts that are on quarter or semester systems can be easily accommodated if they take the whole year of OEC.
We are running 3 sessions of OEC this year.
Certified Nursing Assistant (email for info)
CNA classes also are available in the school. It runs 2 hours a day for one trimester. It requires 3 evenings of clinical opportunities to demonstrate skills. We are currently running 2 sessions of CNA each Trimester.
CNA is now being offered as a Summer School class. Click here for info on that.
This class articulates to apply as college credit.
First Responder Online Blended E-Learning (email for info)
This class combines independent learning with direct lab instruction. Upon successful completion of this course will receive MN Department of Health First Responder and AHA Health Care Provider CPR.
Students complete modules on their computer. It takes approximately 30 hours to complete. Students are required to complete 24 hours of direct skill instruction that is held on a technical college campus (location to be determined). These are usually held on three Saturdays.
This course covers the following topics: a) anatomy/physiology, b) the body systems, c) medical terminology, d) patient assessment, e) vital signs, f) bleeding and shock control, g) spinal immobilization, h) splinting and bandaging, i) use of oxygen and adjunctive equipment.
This class articulates to apply as college credit.
Interns (second-year OEC students)
Interns work on advance skills, focusing on leadership, speaking, teaching, and advance medical experiences. Since these students were probably not 18 during OEC, they were not able to take their EMT certification test. Interns review all skills and information in order to take and pass the EMT test. We have 10 interns scheduled this year.
